Meera: Baby loss.

Multi activity Simulation 🗣️

Mental Health Nursing

Meera Shah-Taylor is 35 years old and has recently experienced a stillbirth. It is now 24 hours after the  delivery of her baby.

The learner is required to accompany Meera and provide compassionate care for a duration of ten minutes until her husband returns to the hospital. 

It is important to note that there is no need for the learner to carry out a physical or mental health examination.

Simulation and Learning outcomes

At the end of the simulation students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of compassionate care.

  • Apply appropriate language and behaviour to support a patient experiencing acute stress.

  • Self-assess their own performance with regard to compassionate contact in relation to a stillbirth.

📁 Briefing

Before starting the XR simulation, the learner must consent to taking part via this online form.

The learner will then receive a briefing and be instructed to sit with Meera, a mother who experienced a stillbirth 24 hours ago. 

The learner will be informed that there is no need to perform a physical or mental health assessment.

The learner will sit with Meera in a private room off a busy maternity ward.

After the simulation, the recording will be watched by the learner, instructor, and potentially other students. The purpose of this is to review the learner's responses and behaviour towards Meera.

Update from Meera

The learner will have the opportunity to listen to a recording made by Meera one year after the loss of her baby. In the recording, Meera shares her reflections on her time at the hospital.

Resources

  • The Ockenden Report (2022) was written following a review at another NHS Trust in response to a letter from bereaved families, raising concerns where babies and mothers died or potentially suffered significant harm whilst receiving maternity care at the hospital. Recommendations were issued for all acute Trusts offering maternity care and the wider maternity community across England to be addressed as soon as possible.
